Around the same time last year, I was enjoy my time rehearsing my presentation for the Species On the Move conference to a herd of African elephants at the Kruger National park, while having no idea how the world may become the next year. For many early career ecologists including me, life without the pandemic can already be stressful at this career stage, and the pandemic may add an additional layer of difficulty. So far, I have cancelled at least five international travel for work including conference, training courses, lab visiting, etc. Luckily, my research is largely dependent on existing data, and was not much directly affected. However, many field-based projects have been interrupted in our department in Czech Republic, most of which are based in tropical sites where travel restrictions apply. However, we are also trying to overcome those challenges and adapt to the “new normals” to keep the science going by all means.
What would the future be like is still unpredictable, but we are trying to adapt, as we did all the time in the field. Life will find a way, and I believe we will, too.
